The flat in Rees St was gutted by the fire on Friday evening. The single occupant, believed to be in his 30s, was visiting a neighbour at the time and lost everything he owned.
It is believed the fire started accidentally when the occupant put a chicken in the oven, and mistakenly turned on the element under a deep frier, before going out.
John Bailey and Hayley Gillingham, who lived in the flat next door, have had to move out because of smoke damage. They spent Friday and Saturday night with parents at Campbell Park, and are looking for alternative accommodation.
They closed all the doors in their flat before leaving, which helped stop the fire from spreading.
Ms Gillingham said she was getting ready for bed and when she pulled the curtain saw a glow reflected on some tanks outside. She did not think anything about it because the neighbour some times sat outside with a brazier going.
''The next thing I knew about it was when another neighbour started banging on the door and telling us to get out,'' she said.
Their bathroom was ''a write off'' and the rest of the flat was smoked damaged. The Duntroon Fire Brigade was called by a neighbour, who saw the fire at 6.54pm.
Deputy chief fire officer Doug Morris said Duntroon had gone for 20 years without a house fire, and now there had been two in the past 12 months.
The first one was on July 31 last year, when a house whose occupants were away caught fire. When the brigade arrived on Friday night, the flat was well alight and the fire spread rapidly through the rest of the interior.
Three tankers, two appliances and 15 fire fighters from Duntroon, Kurow and Glenavy fought the fire, dampening down hot spots before finishing about 10pm.
The building was insured, but the occupant lost everything in the fire. He was staying with friends and being provided with help from the community.
