Oamaru man shaken by 'despicable' burglary

Oamaru police are appealing for help following the 'despicable' burglary of a 94-year-old man's home early this morning.

Police said the elderly man, who lives alone, awoke to noises in his Oamaru home about 2.45am.

The man was held down in his bed while his house was searched and items were taken.

"Targeting elderly people in our community is despicable, and police will be doing their utmost to locate those responsible and hold them to account," Detective Sergeant Dan Keno, of Oamaru, said.

Police are examining the scene and making enquiries in the area.

Several items of value to the man were taken, but police were unable to provide details at this stage of the inquiry.

"Clearly for the elderly victim this is very distressing and upsetting. He is currently being supported by Victim Support and we are facilitating as much support for him as possible. However, he's doing very well considering these events."

Anyone with information should call Oamaru Police on 433-1400. Information can be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
