Police to focus on road safety

Extra police will be on patrol in the Waitaki Valley this Easter, focusing on road safety.

In addition to constables at Kurow and Omarama, Oamaru police will have two extra officers on roads in the region.

Traditionally, the police have a heavy presence at Otematata to patrol the Waitaki Valley during Labour weekend, when violence, disorderly behaviour and drunkenness among an influx of young people, mainly from North Otago and South Canterbury, celebrating the approaching end to the school year, cause problems.

''However, Easter there is usually no issues in general, just the odd incident and the extra officers will be available for those as well.''

Instead, the focus will be on road safety patrols and enforcing the 4kmh speed limit tolerance, particularly on the two state highways through the region.
