Fire on train while waiting at station

A Timaru-bound train was delayed at the Oamaru Railway Station on Thursday night when one of its locomotive units caught fire.

The driver of the northbound train had pulled on to a siding to let a southbound train past when he noticed the fire and disconnected power.

Attempts to put the fire out with three fire extinguishers were not successful.

The Oamaru Volunteer Fire Service was called to the Humber St railway yard at 9.55pm and spent about half an hour at the scene.

Chief fire officer Steve Couper said there was not a lot of visible damage to the train, but the cowlings would need to be reinstated.

Mr Couper said ''luckily'' the fire had been noticed at the Humber St yard which was easily accessible for the fire service.

Earlier in the night, the Oamaru fire service attended a chimney fire in Holmes Hill.
