Possibilities for the Maheno Presbyterian Church are to be discussed at a meeting with the town's community next Tuesday.

Session treasurer and elder of the Maheno Otepopo Presbyterian Parish Robert Naismith said the meeting was the first step in determining how the church and its attached hall could be used in the future.

It did not mean a decision had been made to stop using it for services.

The meeting was part of a review of churches in the parish for which similar meetings had been held at Kakanui, where the church had not been used for some time, and Herbert, where the church had been used recently only for funerals.

Since winter, the Maheno congregation had been using the hall at the back of the church because it was easier to heat.

''We are a smaller group now.''

Mr Naismith acknowledged one option was for multiple use of the church in the future, but he was not sure what that could be because it was beside the Maheno Public Hall and in front of the school.

St Andrew's Anglican Church was across the road.

Closing and selling the church was ''not an option at this stage''.

The aim of next Tuesday's meeting, in the church hall at 7.30pm, was to consult the congregation and wider community.

''We want to discuss all options before any decisions are even considered,'' he said.
