Police seek information on assaults

Police are appealing for information about two serious assaults in Oamaru's Victorian Precinct in the early hours of yesterday.

Two people were knocked unconscious and admitted to Oamaru Hospital with serious facial injuries in two separate incidents in the same street, in the space of about two hours.

Sergeant Craig Sew Hoy, of Oamaru, said a 26 year old Auckland woman was allegedly assaulted in Harbour St about 12.20am. She was found unconscious on the ground near Emulsion Lane with facial fractures.

About 2.20am, police were again called to Harbour St, after a 38 year old Oamaru man was knocked unconscious outside Birdlands Wine Bar.

A male believed to be involved in the incident fled before police arrived, Sgt Sew Hoy said.

Both victims were admitted to Oamaru Hospital and discharged yesterday.

Police were appealing for information on both assaults and Sgt Sew Hoy urged anyone who witnessed the incidents or could identify anyone involved to contact police.

''There were about 60 to 80 people in the area so somebody must know,'' he said.

It was possible the assaults were linked, and investigations were continuing, he said.

Anyone with information can contact the Oamaru Police Station on (03) 433 1400.

Information can also be provided anonymously to the Crimestoppers organisation on 0800 555 111.
