Body found near Omarama

The body of Omarama man Rodney Murdoch (71) was found this morning, police say.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said search and rescue volunteers found the body about 5km from the Omarama township, near the Ahuriri River, at 11am.

Mr Murdoch had been missing since August 6.

Police would like to thank all of the members of the public and Search and Rescue volunteers that have assisted with the search for Mr Murdoch over the past week.

Snr Sgt Benn said "Its not the result that we were hoping for but it does bring some closure for the family"

His dog, Bud, was found alive on State Highway 8 about 5km north of the township on Thursday, as hopes of finding Mr Murdoch alive were fading. 

the death was not being treated as suspicious and had been referred to the coroner.
