Blaze started in switch

The fire that destroyed an Oamaru house on Tuesday was "an accidental fire caused from an electrical event in the light switch'', a fire risk management officer says.

The day of the blaze, Fire Service investigator Cathy Trevathan visited the Lune St house.

It had been vacant for two years as the owners stripped the house before planned renovations, but Ms Trevathan said the fire did not appear to be related to any of the work carried out on the house.

But she did say the fire was a reminder to the public to be vigilant.

"If there are any warning signs of electrical issues in your house, such as flickering lights, fuses that keep blowing, sparking and crackling sounds from plugs, switches or even electrical appliances, have them checked by a qualified electrician'', she said.
