Windfall

A favourable export log market provided the Waitaki District Council with a $215,000 windfall after the council cleared a 28ha forestry block at Herbert in May.

The council felled its largest mature forestry block, a 28ha block of 34-year-old trees, at Herbert Hill, clearing a profit of $639,600 compared with a forecast of $423,700, council parks officer Mike Kwant said.

He said the council had a small number of plantations in the district with mature forests but nothing as sizeable as Herbert Hill.

"The next largest area of mature forest is located near Macraes and is approximately 12ha. Harvest of this area is subject to weather, markets and harvesting crew availability.''
