Franz Josef Glacier has knocked Mt Cook/Aoraki off a top 20 list of New Zealand travel destinations.

Queenstown retains its top-five ranking on the list, which was released yesterday by travel accommodation website Wotif.com based on domestic bookings made online.

Dunedin was the second-highest Otago destination to make the list, holding on to its 2010 ranking of sixth place.

Wanaka jumped one position higher to claim 14th - at the expense of Fiordland lake town Te Anau, which dropped two rungs on the ladder.

Invercargill also climbed three steps off the bottom rung to hold 17th, as Franz Josef edged in to displace Mt Cook.

Auckland topped the list, followed by the capital city, which knocked quake-ravaged Christchurch out of second place.

Wotif spokeswoman Megan Magill said there was a lot of "jostling" this year.

"We've compiled the list based on bookings made by both leisure and business travellers in New Zealand throughout 2010 and have noticed a few changes compared to last year," she said.

The North Island and South Island were equally represented in the top 20, with 10 destinations from each.
