No ORC presence at drop-in meeting

The Otago Regional Council has no involvement with a drop-in information meeting in Lawrence over planned 1080 aerial operations in the Glendhu and Berwick forests.

ORC biosecurity and biodiversity manager Jeff Donaldson made that point yesterday.

The meeting, being held next Thursday, is organised by Ospri, which manages New Zealand's TBfree programmes, aimed at controlling and eventually eliminating bovine tuberculosis.

It will follow an earlier meeting on the same topic, on March 3, which was apparently attended by four people.

Ospri southern South Island programme manager Brent Rohloff, of Dunedin, said the further meeting was being held next Thursday from 4pm to 7pm at the St John meeting rooms, in the main street, in response to a call from the community for further information.

A map would be displayed, printed information provided and any queries answered in a drop-in style event.

Several Ospri staff would attend and the ORC was not involved, Mr Rohloff confirmed.

The planned aerial operations, as part of Ospri's bovine tuberculosis control programme, have attracted adverse comment recently from some critics of 1080 poison.

The ORC continues to fund the use of 1080 for rabbit control and is also involved in possum control to support biodiversity.

However, the ORC had no pest control operational arm and did not itself physically carry out any rabbit or possum control, Mr Donaldson said.

The ORC previously provided annual funding support for Ospri operations in Otago, but that ends in June, when funding will come from other sources under a new model.
