On March 1, the Waimate District Council will open its doors
and let people see facilities not normally open to the
''This is a great opportunity to showcase council
facilities,'' promotions officer Donette Fargher said.
Tours will include visiting the Timaru Rd water bore, which
feeds into the town supply, animal control facilities and
sewage ponds, offering the chance to learn how the facilities
work and the opportunity to talk to staff who operate them.
A day of activities had been organised, starting at 9am, and
there would be a free lunch barbecue in the council car park.
Other departments, including geographic information system
(GIS) mapping, roading, civil defence, building and rural
fire would set up displays and talk to the public at
lunchtime about their respective areas. A programme of
activities is available from the council, library and
