Senior Constable Murray Hewitson, of Owaka, said this type of vandalism was very rare in the Catlins.
It was only the second time he had seen it in the 10 years he had served in the area. He said the offender's work had likely been seen by someone in the community before.
''Taggers tend to doodle on books and pads as a course of habit,'' he said.
