Table Hill farmers Dave and Janene Divers have been named supreme winners of the Otago Ballance Farm Environment Awards.

The couple, who received the award at a function in Wanaka last night, farm a 1600ha sheep and beef property inland from Milton.

Judges described them as ''an extraordinarily focused, motivated and enthusiastic couple'' who had embedded their philosophy of ''sustainable farming, sustainable tourism'' into their personal and business lives.

The farm was bought by Mr Divers' parents, Lindsay and Jill, in 2000, with more land added later.

The couple have run the family-owned property for four years.

The breeding and finishing operation now winters about 10,800 stock units on 1000ha effective, with sheep making up more than 80%.

Divers Farms Ltd also operates Cascade Creek Retreat, a luxury eco-tourism enterprise established two and a-half years ago.

The farm is between the Tokomairiro River's east and west branches and protecting waterways is a high priority.

Most of the waterways are fenced and about 500 eco-sourced plants are planted annually.

Judges said Mr and Mrs Divers were ''great custodians'' of the land, with a passion to manage sustainably and a genuine commitment to understand and manage biodiversity on a significant scale.

Mr Divers, a Lincoln graduate, and Mrs Divers, a Massey graduate, run the operation with the help of two employees, Jason Renwick and Barry Connor, and Mr Divers' parents.

''This is an exceptional family whose members are all passionate about what they do and have built a strong network within their farming team, resulting in a well-rounded, progressive, intergenerational farming business that will remain robust and successful well into the future,'' the judges said.

The couple, who will host a field day at a later date, also won the Massey University innovation award, the Donaghys farm stewardship award and the Ballance Agri-Nutrients soil management award.

Richard and Kerry France, from West Otago, won the Hill Laboratories harvest award and the Alliance Group quality livestock award, Bill and Pam McCall, from Waikoikoi, won the PGG Wrightson land and life award, while Wilson and Angela Wylie, from Owaka, won the Beef and Lamb New Zealand livestock award and the Otago Regional Council water quality management award.
