Milton pool unlikely to open this year

Milton's swimming pool is unlikely to open this year after extensive cracking was found in its base.

Engineers have been tasked with finding a permanent solution after a significant fracture running the length of the pool was discovered during the off-season.

Clutha District Council service delivery group manager Jules Witt said a temporary repair had not been completely ruled out but he did not believe it was the best option given the circumstances.

According to engineers, a temporary solution could cost anywhere between $15,000 and $40,000, Mr Witt said.

A temporary fix could lead to further delays in finding a permanent solution and would not be effective enough to guarantee the pool could open this season, Mr Witt said.

He was not willing to risk spending that amount of money if it was not guaranteed to work in the long run.

''All this means it is unlikely the pool will be open in 2015,'' Mr Witt said.

Until the council got a clearer idea of the repair options it could not give a time frame for when the pool would open, he said.

It was unclear what contributed to the cracking but it could have been caused by effects of flooding, a loss of structural integrity due to degradation or depression in the ground.

The council had contacted the Milton Swimming Club and hoped to accommodate swimmers at the Balclutha Pool, especially those who swam competitively, Mr Witt said.
