The South Otago Museum has joined former nurses to help celebrate the anniversary of the Balclutha Hospital.

South Otago Museum curator Gary Ross is delving into the past to create a display for the upcoming former Balclutha Hospital's 90th anniversary celebrations to be held next month.

The display, titled "Discipline and Sisterhood'', highlights the history of nurse training in Balclutha.

He had collected items used in the hospital during the nurses' training and photos which had been donated.

February's celebrations are expected to be attended by past employees of the hospital.

They would be open to all former employees, not just the nurses.

Organising committee member Helen Huddleston trained as a nurse at the former Balclutha Hospital, starting in 1965.

She continues to nurse.

The original Balclutha Hospital was built in 1926 and closed in 1998, despite widespread protest from the community.

Over the years, the hospital provided training and accommodation for hundreds of nurses, a minority of whom were men.

The anniversary celebrations will be held on February 13 at the Creative Arts Centre.
