Cricket club celebrates 150 not out

It has been a long time coming, but the Milton Cricket Club's 150th jubilee is finally here.

Club president and Milton butcher Simon Scott said the committee organising the jubilee had been counting down for more than a year to this weekend's celebrations, when present and past members of the club will get together to celebrate.

About 70 people were expected for the weekend, including club life members, such as "legend of the club'' Burt Pringle, who had been going through old clippings to share with those gathered.

The club was established in 1866 only a short time after the town itself was, in the 1850s.

Mr Scott said Milton's earliest known competitive match was against Waitahuna in 1869.

Mr Scott had played cricket since he was 5 and had been involved with the club committee for about 21 years.

He hoped about 90 people would attend the event this weekend but numbers registered were just shy of that goal so far.

Mr Scott said organising the event was a "team effort''.

He was looking forward to having a few laughs and reminiscing about old games.

He was happy with the way the club was performing this season and hoped the match today against Kaitangata would bring another win.

"Hopefully we can notch up another win and book a place in the final.''

He said it would be a tough game.

Jubilee events will be held at the cricket ground and Tokomairiro Rugby Clubrooms.

Anyone interested in attending should head to the club grounds or get in contact with Mr Scott.
