Members of the Milton Rotary Club have returned from a voluntary trip to Vanuatu, where they helped rebuild a school in the wake of destruction left by Cyclone Pam from last year.

Milton Rotary Club member Suzie Bearman said the group of five returned on April 27 from the island of Ambrym in Vanuatu. She went with fellow club members Brendon Bearman, Peter Mullan, Colin Tiffany and Ross MacDonald.

It was all-in an effort to repair and construct a new school building decimated on the island by Cyclone Pam last year.

The group helped build dormitories which are able to resist wind gusts of up to 310kmh for the children who board there.

Mrs Bearman said the school the group worked on accommodated all the village children during the week and was essentially a boarding house.

‘‘It catered for a large population and we thought it was a good idea to support the Birkenhead Rotary.''

Once the Milton Rotary Club members were finished, the children were able to shift into the new building.

They were there for just over a week as guests of the villagers, working almost all the time.
