A mother and son tag team from South Otago will be lighting up the small screen later this month.

Blondee Hair Salon owner Selena Aitken-Boyle and her son Shaun (16) filmed the learner-driver reality TV show Mama Son Learner League, which pits three mother-son teams against one another in a test of co-operation, communication and nerves, late last year.

Ms Aitken-Boyle said the pair had to drive golf-carts on an ice-skating rink, practise parallel parking and change a tyre in an attempt to win prizes.

Described as an adrenaline show, it is aimed to teach young male drivers the necessary skills to be safe on the road.

The Balclutha pair were selected for the show after submitting a video of themselves together.

"We just thought it was going to be a joke and didn't think we'd get in,'' Ms Aitken-Boyle said.

"But we did.''

She said it took a week to film the episode and one scene took 21 takes to get right.

"Shaun said he was never going to cuddle me again.''

Ms Aitken-Boyle said they also visited a marae to learn more about Maori culture.

With support from the New Zealand Transport Authority and New Zealand Police, Mama Son Learner League is aimed at male teenagers and parents and good decision-making on the road.

It will premiere on Maori Television on May 18 at 8pm.
