Lighthouse big drawcard

The chance to snap the Nugget Point lighthouse at night is drawing photographers from near and wide, locals say.

Nugget View Motels owner Bruce Kilpatrick said he had noticed an increase in tourists arriving to photograph the landmark, particularly at night.

One night he discovered five cameras set on timers photographing the point.

"They're going out of their way to come to Nugget Point,'' Mr Kilpatrick said.

The way people interacted online and shared their images helped promote the area, he said.

Balclutha photographer Joanne McLeary, who also works at the information centre in Balclutha, said it was clear night-time photography was becoming increasingly popular in the Catlins.

Mrs McLeary saw a large number of people the last time she took her camera out at night.

Her own photographs of the Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, were shown at an exhibition at the Owaka Museum.

Clutha District Council service centre manager Vicki Darling said the exhibit was popular with tourists, who wanted to know where the photographs were taken and how the images were created.
