Acid spill at Fonterra plant

Firefighters were called to Fonterra's Edendale plant after an acid spill at the weekend.

Crews from Edendale and Wyndham were called to the North Rd site about 9.05am on Saturday after reports of a nitric acid spill, a Fire Service spokeswoman said. A hazmat crew from Invercargill was also requested.

The spill was well contained and caused no injuries.

A leak resulted in about 60 litres of acid spilling outside the plant near the inward goods and engineering workshop, she said.

A Fonterra spokesman said plant staff had contained and handled the spill and firefighters were called as a precaution.

The spill was outside the plant on a concrete pad and and ''nowhere near product'', he said.

No one needed to be evacuated as a result of the spill.
