Thieves target Invercargill properties

Thieves are targeting homes, garages and sheds in Invercargill, prompting police to remind people to make sure their properties are secure.

Senior Sergeant Cynthia Fairley said today it appeared most of the burglaries were taking place overnight, and it was important that people remembered to lock all their doors and windows. Safety advice was also available on the police website.

Some items taken included a pram, a lawnmower, garden tools, four mountain bikes and five chainsaws.

"It would appear many items would have needed to be wheeled away, so someone may have seen someone moving these items,'' Snr Sgt Fairley said.

Police would like to hear from anyone who has been offered cheap goods, or if they know where the stolen items are.

They can contact Constable Jordan Edwards at Invercargill Police Station (03) 211 0400.

Alternatively, information can also be provided anonymously via the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Members of the public are also asked to report suspicious behaviour by people or vehicles parked in their area straight away by calling 111.
