Quake prompts night road closure

State Highway 94 at Milford will be closed between 7.30pm and 7.30am daily until the New Zealand Transport Agency is able to inspect a rockfall site, above the western entrance of the Homer Tunnel, following an earthquake yesterday morning.

The 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck about 6.30am 40km north of Milford Sound.

NZTA Southland area manager Peter Robinson said the quake was ''at our threshold'' where the agency needed to do a visual inspection to confirm the safety of the rockfall site.

''Low cloud ruled out any inspection [yesterday] and the forecast for the next two days is not that promising either.

''A heightened level of monitoring is in place at the Homer Tunnel and the road will be closed if there are any signs of rockfall.
