Controversy has surrounded Mike Tindall after CCTV footage was uploaded to YouTube website showing Tindall getting cosy with an unidentified blonde woman at a Queenstown bar last Sunday night.
Tindall married the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips less than two months ago in Edinburgh.
Tindall yesterday broke his silence and spoke to his father, Phil, about the woman.
Mr Tindall, 64, told The Mirror he spoke to his son hours before England's World Cup game yesterday.
"I spoke to Mike just this morning and he says she was an old friend and that's that. He is ignoring it and concentrating on his rugby.''
The pair did not talk about Tindall's 30-year-old wife, but Mr Tindall said he did not think she was upset or had anything to be distressed about.
"It's all just a fuss over nothing, which has only happened because of who Mike is married to.
"I've seen the pictures and must say I don't recognise the girl in the footage at all, but I've been told she's a friend and I know nothing untoward would have happened.''
Meanwhile, security guard Jonathan Dixon, who sparked the stir by uploading the footage to YouTube, will appear in Queenstown District Court today after he was charged with accessing a computer system for dishonest purposes.
Dixon told Britain's The Mail on Sunday he uploaded the footage from Altitude bar because he was outraged by Tindall's "sleazy'' behaviour.
"If my case goes to trial, I want Mike Tindall to appear in the witness box and explain his actions that night.
"It's not that I'm the most moral person in the world, but I have a conscience and I was raised well, and I didn't like what I saw. "Anyone who does this kind of thing when they've made wedding vows in front of God should be ashamed of themselves.''
Witnesses have said Tindall and the woman became increasingly intimate as the night wore on.
"There was no doubt what he was after,'' one witness told The Mail.
"At one stage he put his hand down the back of her jeans. Then he put his hand up her top at the back, as if he was trying to undo her bra strap.''
