Sky Sport's rugby commentator Tony Johnson has topped an Otago Daily Times poll of fans as the most preferred voice at the Rugby World Cup final.

Johnson, who began his commentating career in Dunedin in 1983, was described as a "good broadcaster who knows his onions".

He was considered to be passionate about the game, have a pleasant attitude and "well enunciated speech".

Alongside Johnson at the final, those who responded to the poll would prefer to have Grant Fox and Peter Fitzsimons.

Fox was described by one fan as "not funny, not irreverent, supremely knowledgeable and insightful".

Fitzsimons was described as "genuinely funny, genuinely irreverent and genuinely knowledgeable", although one fan believed he would be "insufferable" if Australia was to beat the All Blacks at the world cup.

The other broadcasters, in order of preference, were: Ian Smith, Keith Quinn, Murray Mexted, Grant Nisbet, Scotty Stevenson, Justin Marshall, Gavin Hastings, John McBeth, Martin Devlin, Glen Osborne, Julian Wilcox, Melodie Robinson and Stuart Barnes.

Mexted was the commentator who got the most negative votes.
