Athletics: Smith fourth in Stockholm 5000m

New Zealand runner Kimberley Smith finished fourth in the women's 5000 metres at the DN Galan athletics grand prix in Stockholm this morning.

Smith clocked 15min, 02.07sec with Ethiopia's Meseret Defar a clear winner in 14min 12.88sec, just missing Tirunesh Dibaba's world record by 1.73sec.

Second, four seconds back, was Mrisho Mohamed Zakia of Tanzania and Joanne Pavey of Britain.

Last week, Smith set a fresh New Zealand 5000m record of 14min 45.93sec at Rome's Golden Gala meet.

Smith has qualified to run both the 5000m and 10,000m at the Olympic Games in Beijing next month, but has indicated she will concentrate on the shorter distance.

In May, she lowered her New Zealand 10,000m record by 45sec when posting a time of 30min 35.54sec in California.

In Austria, Jonathan Wyatt won the annual Grossglockner Berglauf mountain race in Austria for a third straight year.

Wyatt, who set the race record 1hr 11min 43sec in 2006, coveredthe 12.7km, rising to 1514m, this time in 1hr 12min 01sec. Marco Gaiardo of Italy was second in 1hr 12min 45sec.
