Athletics: Eight is enough for McNoe

Chris McNoe is the iron man of Otago athletics. He proved it by entering all 11 senior boys events at the annual Otago Boys' High School athletics sports.

McNoe (17) won a remarkable eight titles, came third in the shot put and high jump and was fifth in the javelin.

He won the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, discus, long jump and triple jump. He won the sprint cup, the jumps cup and the distance cup and two other special events cups.

Historians hunted through the school records and could not find anything to match McNoe's feat in the last 150 years.

McNoe has been competing in athletics since his primary school days and it was the heaviest load he has ever had on one day.

''My muscles were very very sore and I was tired for a week afterwards,'' McNoe admitted.

He found the 800m the hardest event because it was held just 20 minutes after the 1500m finished. He was pushed hard by Matthew Ogle in that race.

It was the first time McNoe had competed in the senior boys grade.

''I entered eight events in the intermediate grade last year but it was not so successful,'' he said.

He won the 400m, 800m and the discus.

The House system was introduced at Otago Boys' High School last year and McNoe was appointed captain of Saxton House this year.

He wanted to lead by example.

''It was a good feeling to get so many points for my house,'' he said.

McNoe will represent Otago at the New Zealand athletics championships at Wellington at the end of the month.

He is also a promising rugby player and was in the Otago under-16 team two years ago and a member of the Otago Boys' First XV last year.

His goal in rugby this year is to make the Otago under-18 team and the provincial sevens team. His athletics goals are to break 50sec for the 400m and 2min for the 800m.

Daniel O'Shea (Hill City-University) won the senior men's 400m in 47.40sec and the 400m hurdles 51.75 at the Canterbury championships in Timaru at the weekend. Oska Inkster-Baynes (Wanaka) won the senior men's 5000m in 15min 26.14sec and Tori Peters (Taieri) the women's javelin with 45.64m.
