Taine Hand broke an Otago record before the ink on the previous record had even dried at the annual Otago primary schools athletics day at the Caledonian Ground yesterday.

Taine (Balmacewen Intermediate) broke Gregor Clarkson's (Tahuna Normal Intermediate) boys under-12 discus record moments after it was set, with his final 28.79m throw.

Gregor had just broken Hamish Mears' 2012 record (27.73m) with a 28.40m heave.

After opening with throws of 17.79m and 25.02m, it was Taine's third throw that put him into the record books.

Maisie Bond (13, Alexandra Primary School) was the other record-breaker on the day.

She smashed Simone Keane's 2012 girls 12 and over shot put record by more than a metre.

On her first of three attempts, Maisie threw the 3.25kg shot 10.07m, well clear of the old 8.96m record.

Taine and Maisie were two of almost 900 pupils from 133 Otago schools competing in the annual athletics day, which attracted a large crowd in windy but sunny conditions.

The event debuted in the 1930s and has been a popular fixture since.
