The 75-year-old masters runner broke national records in the 1500m and 5000m at the South Island masters track and field championships in Timaru at the weekend.

She also holds national records in the 3000m and 800m. Rough, one of 25 Otago athletes competing in Timaru, shattered a record in the 5000m, set by Ailsa Forbes in 1986.

Rough clocked 26min 4.40sec at Aorangi Park, significantly quicker than Forbes' old mark of 31min 55.70sec.

The Otago masters runner then knocked 12.11sec off her 1500m record, when she crossed the line in 7min 1.64sec.

She was not the only Otago athlete setting records. Dalise Sanderson, Tony Tan, Ian Sim and Winifred Harding set South Island records, while Bill Murphy set an Otago record over 60m (8.95sec) in the men's 60-64 years age group.

Harding's South Island and Otago records in the women's 60-64 years age group were set in shot put (8.17m), hammer throw (32.63m), weight throw (11.39m) and throws pentathlon (2960 points).

Sanderson broke the women's 60-64 years 400m record in a time of 1 min 22.47sec, Tan broke the men's 45-49 years long jump record (4.18m) and Sim set a new mark in the men's 65-69 years long jump (4.18m).
