Kavanagh College beat St Kevin's College 64-56 in an all-Otago final to claim the smaller schools national title in Palmerston North on Thursday night.

St Kevin's won the title last season but could not contain Kavanagh's star player, Richard Rodger.

Rodger led the way with 29 points, 19 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and a steal.

Kavanagh coach Gerard Mullin described Rodger's effort as ''outstanding''.

''He's an elite athlete with an awesome future, we hope,'' Mullin said.

''He has vision, leadership and he is a smart, talented basketballer who reads the games and knows the game.

''He just kept managing to get free and to the hoop.''

Rodger made two appearances for the Nuggets this season but Mullin felt he was a player who perhaps deserved more opportunities.

While Rodger was the star, centre Alex Nettleton (seven points, 10 rebounds) and point guard Jacob Cromb (11 points, six rebounds) also made strong contributions in the final.

James McDonald also had a fine tournament and was named in the tournament team alongside team-mates Rodger and Cromb, and St Kevin's player Tiare Barlow.

The girls tournament was won by Buller High School. It beat Aquinas College 64-47.
