Today marks the beginning of the Otago men's club competition and this season is set to be fiercely competitive.

Following the withdrawal of the Nuggets from the national league, club basketball has become more important than ever for Otago.

The St Kilda Saints, the defending champions, are again looking likely to contend for the title with the Bombers, last year's beaten finalists, and the Magic.

The Saints have a relatively familiar squad but have suffered the notable loss of centre Tom Tindale.

Former Nuggets players James Ross, Tom Ingham and Damon Cleverley remain key men.

The early start to the season meant the Saints were not able to front a team for this weekend's scheduled game against the Magic.

Talented guard Micah Lepaio returns to the Magic line-up. Lepaio gained solid minutes on the court for the Nuggets last year and looks to be a huge asset for the club side.

The Magic's coach will remain in the United States until May due to other commitments.

American import Max Jablonski, a possible MVP this year and NBL-quality player, returns as one of the Bombers' strongest players.

Olly Smith, who got court time for the Nuggets last year, will also join the Bombers.

Otago Boys' High School, the defending New Zealand schools champion, can be considered a wildcard this season, following the loss of several players.

Varsity A has consistent scorer Sam King and some new players who could contribute to the team.

Although last year's squad looked promising on paper, it suffered a lot of close losses.

Varsity 2, which dominated the B grade competition last season, has moved up to A grade.

It is a young team that looks promising but will have to step up against veteran teams.

This season will feature six A grade teams and 11 teams in both the B and C grades, indicating reasonable depth in Otago.
