The Otago Goldrush was hoping rather than counting on Tall Fern Samara Gallaher being available for the finals of the Women's Basketball Championship in Porirua next week.

And it looks as though the team's prayers will be answered.

As luck would have it, Gallaher's Australian team, the Hume City Broncos, does not have a game next weekend.

''The intention is she is going to be available,'' Goldrush coach Todd Marshall said.

''She has a game to play this weekend and as long as she comes through that all fit and healthy, she is ready to rumble.

''It is lucky timing. We didn't expect it and we hadn't planned on it but we will certainly take it.''

Gallaher missed the opening tournament but helped the Goldrush win all six games during the second leg in Christchurch earlier this month.

The small forward scored 79 points, and her combination with Tall Ferns forward Jillian Harmon gives the Goldrush a real presence in the key.

In Harmon, the Goldrush has one of the best rebounders in the competition. She is averaging 10.6 a game and has been productive on offence as well, with 14.1 points.

The Goldrush (10-1) has been drawn in section B of the Championship with Canterbury (8-3) and Auckland-Counties Manukau (6-5).

It is a tough pool, and both opponents pressed the Goldrush during the earlier phase of the tournament.

Otago needed overtime to beat Canterbury 67-61 at the Edgar Centre and was pushed hard by Auckland-Counties Manukau in Christchurch, with the Goldrush winning 64-59.

''It's a tough section. Canterbury are really tough defensively and they've got good size and they challenge you defensively.

''Auckland has the best scorer in the league in Jordan Hunter. She has a lovely shot.

''We'll go in with a good frame of mind. We've done all we can so far, so we've just got to make sure we do the things which have been working well for us. That means staying on the job defensively and getting the rebounds. That's our main objective.''
