Boxing: Parker to finish off Tupou in six, Henry says

Boxing New Zealand's South Island selector, Ryan Henry, is picking Joseph Parker will finish off Bowie Tupou in six rounds.

But here is the caveat: Parker has to beware because the robust Tongan has some very heavy hands.

The pair are scheduled to fight in Invercargill on August 1.

It will be Parker's 15th professional bout and Henry believes the 23-year-old is building nicely.

But he also thinks the Tupou fight is a step up in class.

''I think he will be fairly tough and will be a good challenge for Joseph,'' Henry said.

''But I've said that in the past and he has just carved through them.

"[Tupou] is quite fast as well but Joseph is a very fast fighter for a heavyweight and I think Joseph should win this.

''Kevin Barry is a good trainer and is doing really good things with Joseph.''

Boxing is not just about dodging punches - it is also about dodging opponents.

Nothing can send a pugilist's career crashing to the canvas faster than a defeat.

But you cannot build a decent resume by fighting a sack of potatoes every other month, either.

It is a science picking an opponent, and Parker's camp has perhaps taken on more risk than it has in the past.

Tupou has been in the ring against much higher-calibre opponents in Bryant Jennings and Malik Scott.

Admittedly, he lost both fights, but Jennings went 12 rounds with Wladimir Klitschko in April and Scott was undefeated when the pair fought.

The fight against Jennings was in December 2012 but should provide Parker with some insight into his opponent's capabilities.

Jennings eventually caught Tupou with a rapid left cross in the fifth round and followed up with a devastating uppercut which sent him sprawling.

The count went by in a flash, though, and Tupou might have been able to continue.

But in round three, it was Jennings who hit the mat.

The referee waved it away as a slip but Tupou definitely connected with a grazing punch to the top of Jennings' head and dominated that round.

''That could make a difference, having had the tougher opponents,'' Henry said.

''But I think it will come down to the training camp. Joseph's camp studies hard for each fight.

''What I like about Joseph is his speed and agility. His right hand is devastating when it connects and he has proven that a few times now. And he sets it up well off his jab.

''Being a tall guy, that is probably where his weapon is at the moment. And I don't think he is eating too many punches.

''He has a good defensive style. His hands are high. But as he goes up the ranks, we will see, I guess.

''I think we've got a real chance of a world champ here.''
