The one-day hopes of the Volts have been given a boost with the confirmation Ryan ten Doeschate will play for the side in the competition.

Ten Doeschate has played the twenty20 form of the game for Otago over the past couple of seasons, and one four-day match, but this will be his first taste of 50-over cricket with the Volts.

It is a win-win for Otago as not only does the side get a talent as good as the former South African, but he is also not coming at any extra cost.

Otago Cricket Association chief executive Ross Dykes said ten Doeschate would play for match payments and nothing else as he looked to get into some good form before the IPL starts in India after the finish of the Ford Trophy.

With Jimmy Neesham and Nathan McCullum only going to play a small number of games for Otago before joining the New Zealand team for the world twenty20 championships, the availability of ten Doeschate is a bonus.

He will also be a boost in the bowling department with his honest medium-pacers, which could well be needed as James McMillan, Jacob Duffy and Ian Butler are all still injured.

Dykes hopes ten Doeschate will be available for Otago's first game of the competition against Canterbury in Timaru on Sunday.

Ten Doeschate has been retained by IPL side the Kolkota Knight Riders for the coming season.

The one-day competition, known as the Ford Trophy, will be played over the next month and will be Otago's last chance at grabbing some silverware this season. It finished second in both the twenty20 competition and the Plunket Shield this season.

The side will play eight games in the one-day competition before the finals are played in early April.

With the World Cup one-day competition being held in Australia and New Zealand next year, the domestic one-day competition has more meaning for players as over the past couple of years it has almost been tagged on to the end of the season.

Dykes said there was plenty of one-day cricket to be played in New Zealand before the World Cup next year giving players a chance to to put their hand up for inclusion in the national side.
