McCaw is in a Cure Kids team that is taking part in the adventure race at the top of the South Island.
The four-person crew made it through to the Wairoa Gorge about 2am yesterday before embarking on the next stage of the race, a 52km trek through the Red Hills.
McCaw is joined in his team by New Zealand Rugby Player's Association chief executive Rob Nichol, former rugby player Ben Meyer and adventure racer Sarah Fairmaid.
