Equestrian: One-two finish for Douglass sisters

South Canterbury sister act Rosa and Anna Douglass finished one-two in the opening round of the South Island Amateur series at the Otago Area ESNZ Spring Jumping Show in Mosgiel on Saturday.

Reduced to just the five starters, the pair overcame cold and wet conditions on the Erin Duffy-designed track.

Third to go, Rosa Douglass posted the class' first and only clear round to win on Ransom Note.

Anna's unlucky rail at the fourth fence forced her to settle for second with the Fisher family's St Henry.

Former young rider of the year Rose Alfeld (Leeston) got the season under way with a flying start, winning the hotly contested young rider aboard Capprera.

The junior rider title went to Jaimee Bird (Rakaia) on Wenrose Vertigo who had the only clear round.

On Sunday, Invercargill's Nicole White and Cricklewood Ace again showed their dominance claiming the Horse Mini Prix with a double clear in a speedy time of 52.39sec, ahead of Rik Van Miltenburg on Truly Unique.

She was also third with Flashback.

The win came on the back of a win in the Universities series class on Saturday.

The Pony Mini Prix was won by Canterbury visitor Steffi Whittaker (Lincoln) on Moonlight Glow.

There were three clears in the first round, but Whittaker was the only combination to notch up a double clear.

Local Jayne Beattie finished second on Just Lucky as the fastest of the four-faulters.

One of the standout performances of the weekend was Tegan Fitzsimon who rode five horses across 16 classes, only taking one rail all weekend.
