A crowd of about 6000 people is expected when the Wellington Phoenix takes on the Brisbane Roar in an A-League fixture at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Wednesday.

Dunedin Venues Management Ltd (DVML) marketing and communications manager Jo Scully said ticket sales were "not quite" as high as hoped, but she was confident they would improve in the next week.

"Ticket sales are steady and in the last few days we have seen a definite increase in demand. Hopefully, that will carry on into next week."

Because it was a midweek match, she did not expect a large crowd like the 15,000 who attended the pre-season game between the sides in August.

"It would be unrealistic for us to expect a crowd like the one in August, as people have to work the next day, and unlike the last match, there would not be busloads of supporters coming from Southland and Oamaru."

Wellington Phoenix chief executive Nathan Green said the team was looking forward to playing in the stadium after their experience last time.

"It's a fantastic surface, a fantastic venue and a great atmosphere."

The Phoenix was thankful to have been asked back by DVML, he said.

It was intended to take the Phoenix "around the country" to garner support "and we are excited about once again returning to Dunedin."

The Phoenix is bringing "close to a fully fit squad" to Dunedin, and Green is hopeful the side will improve on its pre-season game, when it was beaten 5-1 by the Roar.

The team arrives in Dunedin on Monday and will hold a public training session from 3.30pm and 4.30pm, followed by autograph signings, and a closed training session on Tuesday.

Before Monday's training one lucky primary school class will get a skills session with the players.

Scully said pupils fom primary schools around Dunedin had been creating Phoenix chants and the winning class would attend the skills session.
