Football: Caversham-Dunedin Technical match season's climax

The season's climax will take place at Tonga Park today when top team Caversham plays second-placed Dunedin Technical in the Football South Premier League.

The fixture has stood out like a beacon all year, but Caversham has already been presented with the trophy, and even with two games yet to play, Technical can not overhaul coach Tim Horner's champion side.

There will still be pride to play for, and a decent bunch of spectators will turn up to see who gets the bragging rights after this game.

Technical's critical loss was early against Mosgiel, when the Plainsmen earned a 2-1 win in April.

Other stumbles were against rival Caversham, firstly with a 2-2 draw, then a ''six-pointer'' when Technical was beaten 3-1 as Lewis Jackson hit a hat trick in 14 minutes for Caversham.

Specialist coaching certainly paid off, since Caversham had enlisted former All Whites striker Andy Deeley to do a session with Jackson, and Caversham coach Tim Horner paid tribute to Deeley's skills and advice.

''Andy was a lethal finisher with the All Whites. He scored in every international game he played in, and finished his career with a hat trick against Western Samoa in 1987. So he knows a bit about scoring goals,'' Horner said.

Caversham also went close to a league record by beating Northern 15-0, yet in other matches against the Magpies, the Reds squeaked in 3-2 and 4-3.

This season has been marred by several teams not being able to field their first-choice sides, whether through university exams, holidays or injuries.

That was the case on Tuesday in a match at Logan Park under lights, where a makeshift University side was thrashed 16-0 by a Technical side that played with all guns blazing.

Taylor McCormack (five goals), Alistair Rickerby (four), Tim McLennan (three) and George McCall (two) led the rout for Technical.

So, the scene is set - theoretically, at least - for a goal feast by two teams that have scored 162 FPL goals between them this season.

Caversham has averaged 5.3 goals per game, and Technical has clocked up 4.4 goals per game, making local goalkeepers regular visitors to physiotherapists for back ailments.

But those high-scoring strikers might have to take a back seat if both teams cancel each other out with quality defensive performances.

Caversham defenders Jude Fitzpatrick, Craig Ferguson, Logan Wrightwebb and Rhys Henderson do not allow much daylight in the goal mouth, and have on average conceded less than a goal per game.

Technical also has defensive height to spare in Matt Joy and Andrew Douglas, with the bonus that both are hard to contain in attacking set plays.

Another derby match will be played at Memorial Park, where neighbours Mosgiel and Green Island will lock horns.

Third-placed Mosgiel has two games yet to play, and coach Andrew Brook will be keen to finish in style. Green Island coach Malcolm Fleming will have similar ambitions for a fixture that usually provides top spectator excitement.

Down in the basement, there is also drama as University and Northern are virtually equal on five points and similar goal differential. Both teams play their last games next week.

In the women's league, Roslyn-Wakari travels to play Queenstown tomorrow, and University plays Technical Maroon at Bayfield.
