Football: Technical win pulls it level with Mosgiel

Dunedin Technical scored a goal in each half to beat University 2-0 in a premier league match at Tahuna Park on Saturday and move level on points with second-placed Mosgiel, which had the bye.

The sides seem to be battling for second place, however, as Caversham extended its lead at the top of the table to 11 points by virtue of a comfortable 5-0 win over Northern.

It was a much more even affair at Tahuna Park, where an exciting first half saw plenty of shots, but only one goal.

Despite University's total of 11 first-half shots, Technical's Tom Batty was rarely called into action and the mainly long range efforts did not test the goalkeeper.

At the other end, University was without its regular goalkeeper Charles Morris, who picked up a knee injury in its Chatham Cup loss to Caversham.

Stand-in Tom Gray did an admirable job and looked confident in snuffing out Technical's early efforts.

Gray, however, could do little to stop the 20th-minute opening goal, when Technical's Josh Stewart tucked in a composed finish from six metres after some good build-up play from industrious midfielder Ben Allan.

While Technical controlled much of the tempo, University repeatedly looked dangerous on the counterattack and midfielder Chris Kessell was the chief danger to the home team's defence.

On three first-half occasions, Kessell received the ball deep in his own half and dribbled into space to the edge of the Technical penalty box, before blasting shots agonisingly over the bar.

University had its best chance late in the half, when the lively Truthus Toheriri was put through one-on-one with Batty, but the striker could only shoot straight at the goalkeeper.

The pace of the match slowed down after the break.

Technical was understandably not quite as adventurous, and University consequently did not find as much space.

Technical's imposing centre back pairing of Andrew Douglas and John Curwen were generally untroubled, and University midfielder Henry Flood made some crunching tackles in the middle of the park.

With 15 minutes remaining, Technical coach Tony Martin would have been getting nervous about the single-goal lead, but any fears were allayed when the side finally scored its second.

Fullback David Hayman flung a long throw into the University box and a flick-on found its way to striker Alistair Rickerby to head home from close range.

Up at Forrester Park, Caversham marched on towards the title with a 5-0 victory over Northern.

The league leader raced to an early four-goal lead before Northern managed to nullify the Caversham juggernaut.

A late goal completed the scoring and Caversham's Lewis Jackson finished with four goals.

Surprisingly for the pacy striker, three of them came via headers. Jude Fitzpatrick scored the other goal.

There were goals galore at Sunnyvale right from the opening whistle, as Green Island and Roslyn Wakari had both scored before the spectators had even found their spot on the sideline.

Both sides exchanged goals before the visitors pulled away for a 5-3 win.

Former Green Island youngsters Ben Kiore and Tennessee Kinghorn were impressive for Roslyn and bagged a goal each, Ben O'Farrell scored a brace and James Govan returned from injury to score with a diving header.

Green Island can take plenty of positives and its young striker Max Johnston was again impressive in netting a double.

In the women's Premier League competition, both Dunedin Technical sides conquered their University opposition, the Technical Premier side bouncing back from their Knockout Cup loss last weekend to edge the University Premiers 3-2, and Technical Maroon hammering University B 8-1.
