Golf: Waikato surges, Otago battles in Toro

The Waikato women's team is on target to emulate the men's team and win the Toro interprovincial tournament which continues on the Ashburton golf course today.

Waikato has aready had a bye but is in control of section one with three points and 12 games after beating Aorangi 5-0 in the morning and Hawkes Bay 4-1 in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Otago's woes continue with the team emerging from the first four rounds winless, losing to Bay of Plenty and Wellington yesterday.

Otago lost all five games to the Bay team in the morning while No1 Jo Hicks-Beach was the only winner in the afternoon, beating Wellington's Te Rongopai Clay on the final green.

Bay of Plenty played steady golf in the morning, forging ahead by producing the occasional birdie and taking full advantage of any Otago errors.

Hicks-Beach was the best performer, making a great fightback after being three down after 13 holes.

She won the 14th with a birdie but lost the 15th before winning 16 and 17 with pars, to go on to the last hole one down.

The pair halved the final hole in pars, giving Bay's Alanna Campbell victory by a narrow margin of one.

But the remaining matches went against Otago by large margins with Abigael Crawford (No2) and Annabel Evans (No4) losing on the 13th green.

Tracey Storer (No3) and No5 Susan Greig managed to last one hole further before going down by 5 and 4 and 6 and 4 respectively.

Hicks-Beach was the standout performer in the afternoon despite turning two down to Wellington No1 Caly.

She won the 10th and got back to square with a gimme birdie on the 12th, and went ahead by one winning the 15th.

Clay birdied the par-5 17th. And her drive into the left rough on the final hole set up a good line into the pin.

She sank a tricky 10m downhill sloping putt for a birdie 3 to secure the win.

Crawford was competitive for most of the round but Amy Austin took advantage of Crawford's poor finish, winning with two holes to spare.

Storer was never in contention in the afternoon, while Evans was in with a chance until the final green.

She was one ahead of Wellington No4 Emma Hayward after 15 holes but three-putted on 16 and 17 which cost her the win.

Greig also lost to Chelsea Sharp on the final green after a tight match.

Greig turned one ahead but lost 10 and 12 before getting back to square with a win on the 14thSharp won the 15th to take the lead and the pair halved the final three holes with Greig losing on the final green.
