Golf: Tokarahi peculiar but successful venue

The Tokarahi Golf Club is not the first place one would think of to have a professional golf tournament but it is the port of call for the Legends Pro Am this weekend.

The course, 40km inland from Oamaru, on the road to Danseys Pass, has nine holes and was proposed in the 1960s.

The original clubhouse consisted of three army huts shifted in 1937 to the Tokarahi Collie Club, which was opposite the golf course.

The two groups share the huts.

The club has always been run on volunteers, with some having held positions for decades.

Membership peaked in the 1990s with 80 members and it now sits at 55.

The idea for the pro-am, which has a $20,000 purse this weekend, came when member Barry Matthews, coach of the South Canterbury rugby team, was chatting with Timaru Club professional Peter Hayes, who assured Matthews it was possible to run a Pro Am if the club could raise $11,500.

The club committee discussed the idea and gave the green light.

With wonderful community support from the North Otago area, the money was raised in two weeks and a successful first tournament took place last year.

Initially the organising committee was apprehensive over anyone turning up for the event last year.

But those fears were unfounded. A quality field of 39 professionals and 100 players took part.

The 39 included 19 Australians, Fiji's Krishna Singh and 19 Kiwis.

The course actually has 10 holes, with two par threes side by side.

One is played on the front nine as the second hole while the other is the 11th.

Nice variety in the layout has changing levels and views.

The course, including greens, is in extra good condition.

At 5629m, the course provided an excellent challenge for all last year.

Australian Mike Harwood won with 68.

Precious few broke 70.

This year's event, which starts today, has a two-day format.

Today, the professionals will play for a place in the top 30 to join the amateurs tomorrow to battle for the $20,000.

A wild foods barbecue will be a drawcard tonight.

Harwood is back to defend his title and he will be joined by Peter Fowler, Simon and Craig Owen, plus European Senior Tour player Tim Elliot.
