Albany A strengthened its grip on the challenge shield when it held on for a 1-0 win over Kings United A in the premier men's grade on Saturday.

The defending champion has been absent from the McMillan Centre over the past month with players away at representative tournaments, but it hit the turf running from the opening whistle when Jack Gilbert launched himself off the halfway mark to begin the attack.

This action from Gilbert set the tone for Albany and his team-mates followed suit to produce a fast-paced encounter.

Albany striker Nathan Gilbert pounced on a mistake to give his side an early 1-0 lead and, although the pace of the game remained the same, so did the scoreline.

Albany looked strong around the field and produced some impressive ball skills in less than impressive conditions.

However, after an impressive 5-0 win over University Black last week, Kings was not about to accept defeat and responded with an attack of its own.

Opportunities flowed freely for both sides for the remainder of the first half, but neither team could capitalise.

This pattern continued into the second half and Kings' hunger began to intensify. Kings camped within Albany's half and looked for an opening as it hammered away at the defence.

Numerous chances from broken play, controlled opportunities and penalty corners came to no avail for Kings, and Albany's defence held firm as the white wave threatened.

Although Kings created more opportunities in the second half, Albany also looked threatening on attack, but could not extend its lead beyond Gilbert's early goal.

Albany player-coach Nick Elder said it was good to be back on the turf after a long break and he was pleased to retain the challenge shield in the process.

Kings midfielder Rory McLean was disappointed his side could not convert any of its numerous opportunities into a goal, but he was impressed with his side's defence.

University Blue claimed a 4-2 win over Albany A, and KETOB A edged University Seals 4-3 in deferred games on Friday night.

On Saturday, University Blue beat University Black 2-0 in the battle of the students, Taieri Tuataras downed University Seals 4-3 and KETOB A defeated Taieri B 2-0.
