Hockey: Goalies shine in hard fought draw

The premier women's game between Momona A and City Highlanders A ended in a rare scoreless draw on Saturday.

It began at a very fast pace which was maintained for most of the game, perhaps partly due to the freezing conditions and the need to keep warm.

City looked dominant, winning an early penalty corner which was saved off the pads, and a quick turnaround by Momona backs and midfield saw the ball return rapidly up the other end.

Another run all the way down the City wing was halted by a spot tackle by the sharp eyed Millie Cowan.

Strong midfield play by Lydia Shirley led to another shot on goal which was saved by City goalie Lily LeBrun, and the rebound shot was blocked by a defender's stick.

After halftime, a two on one situation created by City's strikers should have resulted in a goal but it went astray, and that was followed by a strike which hit the bar.

A penalty corner won by Momona was stopped from going in by the fast run out of defender Lucy Harris.

It was a staunch performance by both teams, and both goalies contributed to the scoreless result. Larissa Peyroux played well for Momona.

Taieri A beat University B 2-0, with both goals scored in the first half by Sophie Allison. Taieri looked sharp on attack and University, playing with only 10 players, fought hard in the second half.

University White beat St Hilda's 7-1 in the other premier game.

Staying in the top four (premier 1) for the next round are University White, Momona A, City Highlanders A and Taieri A, while University B and St Hilda's drop to premier 2.
