The winners of last year's premier women's competition, the University White Huskies, beat Taieri A 5-0 in a match where the scoreline rather favoured the victors.

The two sides were even in all ways apart from putting the ball in the back of the net.

The students were very good in that department while Taieri had possession but could not convert that into goals.

The game began with Taieri charging down the right and Varsity clearing with a great kick out.

Varsity then settled down and gained some dominance in the midfield getting into the circle but the attack was well defended by Taieri.

The game continued with neither team clearly stronger until 30 minutes in when a move up the left led to a circle penetration and University forward Charlotte Arthur finished it off with an individual goal.

This was followed not long after by a team goal again from the field put in by Mandy Wiles.

Taieri came back with a vengeance after halftime, camping up in their 25m area from where it headed into the circle with the possibility of a goal but then it could not quite pull it off.

Varsity seized upon a loose ball sent back to a Taieri midfielder and a good shot put in again by Arthur made the score 3-0.

The students capitalised on the lead with yet another field goal by Arthur and finally cemented the win with a fifth goal from a penalty corner, successfully struck by Kelly Arthur.

The score would have been even higher but for a stroke saved by Taieri goalie Amanda Burleigh.

Huskies coach Sebastian Buddle said his girls played well in patches and that it was an even competitive game.

Player of the day was hat trick-scorer Charlotte Arthur.

Kim Allan played well for Taieri in the midfield.

In the other premier games, City Highlanders A beat University Black Stingrays 11-2, and Momona A beat St Hildas 13-0.
