Otago rugby league officials are eagerly anticipating the pre-season match between the Warriors and the Broncos later this month.

The February 23 clash at Forsyth Barr Stadium will be the first time the Warriors have played in Dunedin.

It also presents a big oportunity for the code to be promoted in the South. An open carnival will be held at Logan Park on the day of the game, and the full Warriors squad will be attending.

''It will be very exciting. It has exceeded our expectations,'' Otago Rugby League community development officer Grant Milne said.

''Our continued involvement is important for the Warriors and the NRL.

''The profile of the Warriors and Broncos players is massive. All the superstars who we see on telly each week will be there.''

The carnival and the game will be promoted on Friday, February 22 when Warriors and Broncos players visit schools.

At the Saturday event, games of non-contact ''backyard league'' will be played by children between the ages of 7 and 12.

Six fields will be set up and children will be placed in teams alongside the Warriors, Broncos and Otago players.

''The Warriors and Broncos players will sign posters and there will be giveaways,'' Milne said. Some local children will be ball boys and girls for the match.

The carnival will be held at Logan Park No 1 from 12.30pm to 2pm.

The game kicks off at the Forsyth Barr Stadium at 7.30pm.
