League: Warriors not returning next year

The Warriors will not be back but there is still hope top rugby league will be played at Forsyth Barr Stadium next year.

The Kiwis beat a gallant English side 16-14 at the stadium on Saturday night, which qualified the New Zealand team for the final in Wellington against Australia.

It was the first time the Kiwis had played in Dunedin since 1928 and organisers had initially hoped for a turnout of more than 20,000.

A crowd of just under 16,000 attended the game.

It appears unlikely it will be another 86 years before the Kiwis come back to Dunedin, but the Warriors will not be making it a hat trick of visits next year.

The league club confirmed yesterday it would not be playing in Dunedin in 2015.

In 2013, the Warriors played the Broncos in the pre-season and a crowd of more than 15,000 attended. The same teams met in February this year but a crowd of just over 6000 turned out.

The Warriors' pre-season games next year have not been finalised but Dunedin is off the list and the side will not be heading south.

A Dunedin Venues Management Ltd spokeswoman said yesterday the crowd on Saturday night showed there was an appetite for league in the city.

There had been initial talks with an interested party for a league game at the stadium next year but she declined to identify the organisation as talks were still at an early stage.

Many thought the stadium deserved a full NRL game this year after the good crowd in 2013 and that was the reason not many people turned up for the match this year.

Hosting a full NRL game would be a feather in the cap for the stadium.

Some Australian league clubs move their home games against the Warriors to other centres as the Warriors do not traditionally draw big crowds in Australia.

NZRL chief executive Phil Holden could not be contacted yesterday but international league could be back at the stadium in three years.

Australia and New Zealand are hosting the World Cup in 2017.

Although it has yet to be decided where games are being played, at last year's World Cup in England more than 20 grounds were used, so Forsyth Barr Stadium is likely to host a game in the tournament.
