A quest to find the best type of endurance athlete has encouraged Dunedin man Josh Harris to set up a new race to be held at Karitane later this year.

Multi-x is the new race designed by Harris, which offers $3000 for first place and gives female and older athletes a head start for the money.

''The new race format is a first of its kind,'' Harris said.

''Athletes will get to choose how they race the course and which sections they want to do.''

The course has three sections for mountain biking, kayaking and running. It is raced over six and 12 hours and each section will take about 30 minutes for the top athletes to complete.

Competitors score a point for every lap they finish and the person with the most points at the end of the race wins.

However, any athlete who completes a lap of all three disciplines in order will gain an extra point, and any athlete who completes four consecutive laps of the same discipline will get a bonus point.

''I have always wanted to see who is the better athlete - a kayaker, runner, biker or multisporter,'' Harris said.

''This is the first time we can really see who is the best endurance athlete in New Zealand.''

Entry for the event on November 1 starts at $75 for the six-hour event and $99 for the 12-hour event and includes categories for under 40, 40 to 59 and over 60. A field of 150 people is expected.

Entries close on September 30.

Athletes can enter online (adventurechallenge.co.nz).
