College A signalled its intentions in the Dunedin premier competition when it beat the Southern Magpies, the defending champion, 49-43 on Saturday.

Going into the match, College was the only unbeaten team in the competition, and it came out firing in the first quarter, taking an early 8-2 lead and pushing that out to 10 goals at the first break.

The attacking end for College again gelled quickly with the midcourt combination of Sophie Napper and Cherith Schraag, in particular, and College was able to find the circle edge with relative ease.

Southern was not able to respond to the intensity from College. It struggled to find any momentum throughout the court and was not able to make use of early turnovers.

Southern coach Georgie Salter made changes at the break to try to find the line up to get back into the game.

Sophie Erwood moved out to goal attack while Jen O'Connell came off the bench into goal shoot to try to open up the shooting circle. It started to pay dividends as the Magpies won the quarter 15-11 and got the scoreline back to 28-22.

A feature of the College line up this season has been its defensive structure all the way down the court, and after halftime, College started to dictate the pace of the game, successfully slowing down Southern on its transition through the court.

Southern was able to close the gap, on a couple of occasions, to fewer than four goals but just could not peg it back any further, as College withstood the pressure to close out the match.

College coach Lauren Piebenga was pleased with her team's first quarter effort to put it in a strong position.

''We were lucky to get off to a nice buffer to start with and that proved to be pretty crucial in the end,'' Piebenga said.

''We have been focusing on trying to play 60 minutes so we just need to be able to sustain that intensity a bit longer.''

Southern coach Georgie Salter lamented her side's slow start.

''Very disappointing start but we had chances and we were a bit rushed,'' Salter said.

''That led to those turnovers and that just comes down to getting to know each other - those combinations out on court.''

In the two earlier matches, Phys Ed A beat University Albion 53-44, and Southern Tui comfortably beat Phys Ed B 61-43.
