Netball: University A beats depleted B team

University-Albion A continued its good form when it beat clubmate University-Albion B 72-39 in the Dunedin premier competition on Saturday.

University-Albion B was forced to start the game a player short due to an off court infringement, and it opted to forgo a wing defence.

This allowed the A team's explosive midcourt combination of Kate McFarlane and Rachael Horrocks an infinite amount of space.

When the first quarter score blew out to 20 9 the game was already out of reach for University Albion B.

University Albion A shooters Emma King and Bridget Thayer were on point early in the second quarter, and both players were not afraid to turn and shoot for the remainder of the game.

For University Albion B, Bayley Smith and Anjena Singh combined well in the first half, and at times the ball they received was pleasing to watch, but their finishing let them down.

University Albion A co captain Georgie McFarlane was on the bench after popping out her shoulder during the week and is expected to be out of action for at least the next four weeks.

''Everyone was on to it today, especially on defence all the way through court. It was great to watch,'' McFarlane said.

McFarlane was quick to praise her shooters' performance.

''Having three shooters in the team means they are always fighting it out for positions on court and both Bridget and Emma were on fire today,'' McFarlane said.

University Albion B co captain Ashlee Murphy was pleased with her team's attitude throughout the game.

''I think that we kept working on it and kept improving as the game went on. We never gave up and it was pleasing to draw the last quarter,'' Murphy said.

It was hard for the team to adjust to the intensity of the premier A grade, she said.

''It's a huge change. The games are a lot faster than what we were used to. We knew it was going to be hard, so we can only continue to improve each week.''

In the day's only other game, College A showed no mercy as it beat Southern Tui 70-31. The game between the Southern Magpies and Phys Ed A has been postponed.
