Netball: U23 team looking for turn around

The South under-23 team has a chance to put two years of heartbreak behind it in Auckland next week.

It was pipped by one goal against Waikato-Bay of Plenty in both the 2013 and 2014 national championships.

Coach Lauren Piebenga was ''absolutely aware'' of the history and said the team would be doing its utmost to turn it around.

While defender Phoenix Karaka's inclusion in the Silver Ferns squad for the Netball World Cup in Sydney next month has ruled her out of the team, there are still six Steel players in the team seeking an elusive title.

Shooters Te Paea Selby-Rickit, Sophia Fenwick and Brooke Leaver, defender Storm Purvis and midcourters Gina Crampton and Stacey Peeters are all in the side.

Leaver was in the Waikato-Bay of Plenty team that pipped South the past two years, and made the most of limited opportunities in her first season with the Steel.

While almost half the team are franchise players, Piebenga said the four other zones were also strong.

''Yes, we have got a number of franchise players in the team, but we are not the exception to the rule there,'' she said.

''We've got some great experience, but we've also got some girls who have not had a lot of game time. So we need to make sure that we are able to intergrade the franchise players and the club players and make sure that's as seamless as possible.

''As much as we are confident in what we are putting out on court, we are certainly not underestimating any of our opponents.''

Crampton, Selby-Rickit and Purvis were also named in the New Zealand A team to play England and an under-21 Australian team ahead of the World Cup next month.

Piebenga, who has been involved in four national titles with the senior and under-21 Otago/Dunedin teams in recent years, said the team had had a ''pleasing build-up'' and ''ironed out some kinks in the armour'' with a warm-up match against Mainland in Temuka last weekend.

The team leaves for Auckland tomorrow and opens its campaign against Central on Monday morning.

It plays Mainland on Monday night, before playing Northern and Waikato-Bay of Plenty on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

The finals will be played on Thursday.
